Bear Brook Cabins

They have no electricity, you walk in from a drop-off area, and dogs are allowed. In 2026 NH State Parks listed the Bear Hill cabins at $55 a night. The park also rents one hike-in lean-to, the Smith Pond Shelter, which the Civilian Conservation Corps built in 1937.
Cabins at a Glance
The Bear Hill Pond Cabins
The cabins sit on Bear Hill Pond, separate from Beaver Pond Campground. You drive to a drop-off area, unload, and carry your gear to the cabin. There is no electricity, so bring lanterns and a way to charge a phone. NH State Parks says the cabins come furnished, but it does not list bedding or cookware, so plan to bring your own and call the park if you need to know what is inside.
Water and toilets are simple. There is one flush toilet and three portable toilets for the cabin area, a bathroom faucet and an outside spigot for drinking water. A small camp store at Bear Hill sells firewood and basics.
The setting is quiet. Bear Hill Pond allows only non-motorized boats, and you can fish from shore or a canoe you bring. The Hall Mountain trail network starts close by, which is why NH State Parks' own photos of the cabins show mountain bikers around the campfire. See mountain biking and hiking.
A Site the CCC Built
The National Register nomination for the park's CCC camp says most of the corps' park development work went into what is now the Bear Hill Pond camping site, about five miles from their work camp. It was the park's first organized camp, developed in 1936 and 1937. The camp buildings that survive now hold the CCC museum.
What a Cabin Costs
NH State Parks listed the Bear Hill cabins at $55 a night in 2026, under its rate for camper cabins without electricity. A non-refundable reservation fee is added when you book. Each cabin holds no more than 4 or 6 people, depending on its size.
The Smith Pond Shelter
The Smith Pond Shelter is an Adirondack-style lean-to built in 1937 by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. It stands on a hill above Smith Pond, with steps down to the water. Inside are two wide wooden bunks. Outside there is a stone cook place and two outhouses.
- Hike-in only. You park at the trailhead and walk to the site, which is off the main campground road.
- The nightly fee covers two adults and up to four dependent children under 18.
- Six people maximum, and no more than four of them adults.
- Bring all your drinking water. Buy firewood at the park store.
Season
The cabins follow the campground calendar. In 2026 the Bear Hill cabins went to primitive season on October 12 and the last night was October 24. In primitive season, NH State Parks warns that water and flush toilets may be off and store hours are limited.
